Cat Behavior Problems

I love this quote about cat behavior,

“Dogs come when they’re called;
cats take a message and get back to you later.”

Yes our lovable friends have the most amazing behavior traits...that's why they are so unpredicable.

But like cats themselves, behavioral problems can come in all shapes and sizes. From aggression to refusing to use the litter box, cats can make their fears, phobias and pet peeves known to us in a variety of ways.

Keep in mind that all behavioral problems aren’t psychological – sometimes your cat can be behaving in a certain way because they have an underlying medical problem. (For example – a senile cat may be forgetting to use the litter box – not doing it deliberately to tick you off.)

Aggression
What it looks like:

Aggression isn’t a visible medical condition – you’ll have to observe it and see what it feels like!

Feline aggression directed towards people can be predatory, playful or irritable. Stalking and pouncing on a person's feet or ankles is typical of predatory aggression. If the cat is young, the aggression is probably play-oriented. Irritable aggression usually occurs when the cat is being stroked too roughly or for too long a time.

What to look for:

  • Biting
  • Scratching
  • Clawing
  • Full attack mode – pouncing on your feet or ankles, for example.
  • Stalking then attacking
